Metformin is a widely prescribed anti-diabetic medicine that also reduces body weight. There is ongoing debate about the mechanisms that mediate metformin’s effects on energy balance. This study shows that metformin induces the formation of hunger-reducing metabolite N-lactoyl-phenylalanine (Lac-Phe), a byproduct of muscle fatigue and an amino acid called phenylalanine, found after heavy exercise.
I’m surprised muscle fatigue reduces hunger. I would have thought the body would want to make up the caloric deficit.
I workout in the morning right after I wake up. Many times it’s happened that I feel hungry after waking up, but the hunger sort of reduces or almost goes away after I finish my workout. I used to wonder why, maybe this is the reason.
