Useless. Time for the Social Democrats to form their own party.

I’m sure to get dumped on for saying this but ya’ll need to chill out. President’s generally have authority to carry out military strikes. I can’t think of one in my lifetime that didn’t bomb somebody without congressional approval beforehand. Declaring war is a different matter but all the differences and nuances and where exactly the lines are, is not something courts have ever really figured out.

This impeachment resolution specifically said he declared war and he should be impeached because it’s Congress’ job to declare war. That’s the entirety of the complaint. It’s short. And it’s lazy. He didn’t declare war. He certainly risked starting a war, but he didn’t declare one. Democrats would have looked stupid for impeaching him for something he didn’t actually do and it would have failed just on the language alone. It did fail. And it should have.

All this ‘democrats are traitors’ or ‘they’re supporting fascism’ or ‘stabbing us in the back’ is crazy. They put forth a really bad impeachment resolution and it got shot down. You should be mad at AOC and Green for putting up a horrible impeachment resolution. It probably looked better last week when it looked like a real war might happen, but I don’t see anything impeachable here. If there is something, it’s deep and nuanced, it’s something that no one has ever agreed on the interpretation of, it’s something that Congress has let Presidents get away with for decades.

We’re not getting rid of this asshole by persuading the public that he disobeyed some highly nuanced technicality that nobody even agrees on. Shit, I’m getting sleepy just thinking about listening to a congressional hearing on it.

Doing a drone strike to kill specific people not officially part of a government is vastly different than destroying infrastructure that is still controlled by a country’s government.

And then calling it a war on Iranian nukes.

I feel like that is so intentionally provocative it has to be worth mentioning. Like if Japan said they were at war with Pearl Harbor not America.

I don’t get it. What’s there to chill out about? Is it fine to bomb another country just because war wasn’t officially declared?

It’s not “fine”, but it’s also not him acting outside his authority. Fuck, who was the last president that didn’t bomb anywhere without Congress declaring war? Who was the last president to even get Congressional approval before all bombings? I’ll give you a hint, it wasn’t in the last 25 years.

“Trump does thing that other presidents, both Democrat and Republican have done without issue in the past” is poor grounds for an impeachment.

are you now on purpose misrepresenting this???

He said impeachment doesn’t make sense because he didn’t do what they’re accusing him of, and what he actually did is something pretty much every president has done in the past century, and is apparently allowed.

Doesn’t mean him doing it is morally right, or that he should do it or… Just that this impeachment is just a silly show that will achieve nothing except making everyone taking it seriously look like an idiot…

Crazy, ain’t it? Lemming really isn’t a bad descriptor for a lot the folks on here. Their brains have fallen out just like the MAGAts.

Trump should already be in prison for all kinds of shit. That being said, this is obviously political grandstanding and not the hill to die on. It doesn’t matter as it is a non-starter and distracts from the real issues.

However, gotta get that two minutes hate in. Don’t think, just scream. Don’t be effective in dealing with the far right, just be angry.

Funny how when America got bombed it was perceived as a clear declaration of war… Those double standards my guy

It can indeed be taken as a declaration of war by the other party, but if it isn’t officially one according to the American law, then that’s it… This appears to be within the powers of the president, and that’s all this post is about…

Does it completely suck that he can do this? obviously. But this impeachment seems silly, so why make a fool of yourself and go through with it when it just has 0 chance of succeeding?

Correct me if I’m reading your post wrong, but you stated that people should chill out about this declaration of war because he didn’t actually declare a war, he just casually dropped some bombs. I understand that to mean that people should accept the irrationality because somehow the US doesn’t have a system in place to police itself. Curious how that would play out if other countries did the same. Oh no we didn’t declare war, it was this fat idiot Hirohito going rogue again, oopsie. Time for peace now, thank you for your attention to this matter.

I completely understand that feeling, and it was my initial reaction too, but honestly, I think they’re kind of right.

If you’re playing chess and the opponent’s knight takes your rook, do you throw your queen at it on principle? Even though it’s backed by a pawn? Or do you tighten up your own defenses and wait for the best opportunity to strike?

Don’t get me wrong, AOC and Green are the energy we need here. I don’t even think it’s a bad play for them to make as much noise as possible about Trump’s overreach, even if it is repeating the same behavior we’ve seen for decades. But if 126 Democrats voted against it, how many Republicans actually voted for it? What’s the strategic cost of using the inertia that might flip a handful of Republicans on something that doesn’t have the numbers yet?

What if we need them for a play down the line? What if we can flip more of them and actually get an impeachment instead of just proposing one on principle because we didn’t already exhaust the idea?

I think the people should be pushing for impeachment, and I think Congress should impeach him. But I want that to actually happen. I don’t just want it to be a sentiment that doesn’t go anywhere.

I mean that’s what they are doing in the middle east all the time. They literally attack each other endlessly but aren’t technically at war most of the time.

OP is saying that there is a difference between actions that can be interpreted as an act of war and a formal declaration of war. It seems pedantic but I have to agree the difference is there. Iran has no interest declaring war on the US. Luckily there were enough adults making the decision that a retaliatory strike (with advance warning) was enough to call it a day.

In what world not bombing someone directly is not a declaration of war? So just about anyone can go around and blow shit up anywhere and even they are asked about it the answer should be a clear “yes, it was me” and an oopsie and all is forgiven? “It was all in good fun ol’ chap!”.

The guy is even delusional about how his actions ended a 30 year war, but when Iran will start blowing people up and saying “sure, it was us”, they will for sure also go “we are in a war, aren’t we?”.

It’s ok, Trump can just continue jerking himself off in Mar-a-lago and imagine himself as a great leader respected by everyone.

        Why don’t you google it?

Declaration of war seems to have a specific meaning, and doing a bombing doesn’t seem to be part of it.

and all the rest of your post just doesn’t make any sense. It’s not because you didn’t officially declare war, that the other party can’t retaliate, can’t declare war on you can’t… It’s just… an attack can cause a war, but isn’t a declaration of war, those are two separate things.

I understand the technicality or a declaration of war versul beginning of hostilities. By that judgement Russia didn’t declare a war on Ukraine, yet here we are.

In modern times the above definitions are somewhat intertwined. You don’t have to declare war officially by following law and order, but it’s inferred from your actions.

Either way, both Putin and his muppet Trump are assholes.

Indeed, Russia still calls it a “special operation” if i’m not mistaken. The rest of the world obviously deems it a war.

If we don’t agree with this, we should push for the law to be changed, but so far it seems he’s within his rights to call such a strike, and democrats not willing to waste their time on this is then reasonable.

That’s all this is about. Not justifying his actions, not saying it isn’t war, not saying it shouldn’t be different. Just stating the facts, what they mean, and thus why the actions of these democrats sadly does seem to make sense…
