Speaking from personal experience the ones who rail the most about privacy are the ones doing the shadiest shit.

Nope I meant if you have an unhealthy obsession about privacy.

Normal people understand privacy but they aren’t insane about it.

Example - I still use whatsapp because my relationships with my family and friends is more important.

Like not using Whatsapp, whose parent company supports said Billionaires and Fascists.

I am sorry but this is stupid. Here in Europe they want to install an AI spy software on every phone that scans your text and pictures for potentially pedo/grooming stuff. I have no interest in doing that obviously but I think this goes too far and once this is in place it won’t be used for what they say.

If you do not defend your rights they will be taken away and people need to have that exhausting discussion with people like you all the time.

So you think they’ll never bother to use your personal information against you, or do the same to anyone you care about? And when it does happen, will you again redraw the boundaries so you’ll never have to stand up for anything or against anyone… all the while assuring others it’s only another small concession?

I don’t pretend to be more important than I am.

Control what you can, accept what you can’t.

The Jews in the Netherlands when the Nazis invaded would like a word.

All they did was put their religion on a census.

If you can’t imagine a world where your private life can be used against you, your imagination is shit tbh.

It comes down to your definitit of healthy.

There is a difference between obsession / paranoia regarding privacy and wanting to keep your data private as a default.

I would argue it’s also convenience as well.

I think most people would tell you they want their data private as default. The fact of the matter though, that many in places like this don’t want to hear, is the majority of people simply do not give a shit.

That doesn’t mean they’re wrong headed or don’t care about privacy. It just means the convenience is more important.

Fact of the matter is if you use a computer attached to The Internet nothing is private. If you think this I have a bridge to sell you.

Yes, network effect goes brrrr. It is hard to get people to care enough to Jump ship to let’s say signal.

About the bridge: I am using only free software. I use the PC to look up info, watch shows(local), send encrypted messages and play games (local and von with friends). Where is the privacy intrusion? My IP and metadata?

Web fingerprinting is a bitch (DNS too), also it’s likely you have at least one non-free blob (mostly software freedom rather than privacy being concerned here), otherwise mostly lgtm

If someone cares enough they will find everything they need to know. The difference is the time and effort.

The sad fact no one wants to admit is none of us are special and no one gives a shit.

I’d say it is analogous to traffic safety, I look both ways before crossing a road to reduce risk, but if a hitman is out to get me, looking both ways won’t save me, but what are the odds compared to a random car with a distracted driver?
I try to protect privacy in small ways, but harbor no illusion about that making me untraceable or something.

Having nothing to hide doesn’t mean having something to share. To believe otherwise is entitlement at best, but more likely goes hand in hand with our current rape/control culture.
