India has imposed restrictions on the export of basmati rice, following the imposition of a 20% duty on parboiled rice. The government has set a minimum export price of $1,200 per ton for basmati rice shipments. Contracts below this price will be put on hold and evaluated by a committee.

I was confused until I read this:

The move is meant to check non-basmati exports which are prohibited but being exported in the garb of Basmati…

Yes, same with last year’s festive season. So it is part of a wider plan around domestic supplies, price controls, and limiting basmati fakes.

Last month, the government banned exports of non-basmati white rice to boost domestic supply and keep retail prices under check during the upcoming festive season.

Oh no I was hoping it would not extend to the basmati. Still, I shouldn’t complain. It is the parboiled and broken rice to low income countries which are more concerning.

Seems there might be more strains if farm produce is lower than expected. Onions too are under 40% export tax in an attempt to increase domestic supplies.

The present price rise has two aspects to it: first is the shortage in stored produce; the second has to do with lower-than-expected acreage of the bulb itself. Unlike other vegetables such as okra or beans, onions are not grown around the year.

Wow, this will effect 12% of global onions. Thank you for the article.

Between weather and war, global food supplies are strained this year. It is very concerning.

OMG! True. I should be thankful for what I have. Sometimes I wonder India has money to send rockets and satellite to space but can’t fix its infrastructure and poverty. Feel like its intentional.

No, it feels like poor understanding of economics on your side.

Space programs are an investment. They create way more GDP than they cost. They educate young engineers, prop up local high tech companies and generally help create a highly skilled labor force that then also is able to work in other fields, using skills and technologies from the space program.

I’m not sure about India, but there are studies about the economic impact of NASA, and every dollar spent on them returns several dollars in GDP/tax revenue.
