I’m surprised to see Alya in the top spot. I really didn’t like it. It felt extremely shallow, and relied on fanservice and lewd “accidents” to entertain.
I thought it might have been a show about the cultures of Japanese and Russian mixing and clashing, while being an otherwise nice slice of life or romance show. But in reality it’s much more shallow than that.
I know shows like this (fanservice, romance, lewd interactions, etc) are popular but I rarely see one get to the top spot like this.

That’s how it got there

I recall that Ishuzoku Reviewers was 1st place in some weeks as well, you may severely underestimate the power of horny in a mostly teen and young adult audience.
Ah yeah I remember that one. I feel like that may have been an exception, there was a lot of buzz around that one if I remember correctly, just because it pushed the lewd boundaries of normal TV anime.
Yeah, I was surprised as well. It’s important to remember that AC is just one audience though. Alya ended up #2 on their most anticipated list. So, I guess it delivered what AC was looking for while Oshi no Ko must not have to the same degree.
I am curious if Alya will stay on top as the season goes or whether the audience moves on.
What a wild selection.
First week of the new season! This means that all the shows get marked as new entrants despite some of them continuing from last season. Many shows have yet to premiere for this list as there are only 23 shows listed (usually a full season is 50-60). Still surprising to see something come out on top over Oshi no Ko. We’ll see if Alya’s smug is enough to hold onto the top spot as the season gets going proper.
Genuine question. How representative is anime corner to the tastes of the broader viewer base?
That’s a really good question. From looking at the rankings for different sites for a little while now, I think that AC tends to be a bit biased toward romance. For example, last season saw Date a Live near the top of the chart most of the season while it wasn’t on the other charts (reddit karma or Anime Trending).
Looking at the reddit karma for this past week, Oshi no Ko is running away with things with about 2x as much karma as Alya. Other shows are higher up as well with solid showings from Spice and Wolf as well as Slime.
Ehh… it’s approximately in line with source material ratings. On the other hand, if the community is small, there would be some odd tilts due to a lack of total variety, so the people who have watched four seasons of Date A Live would obviously know to recommend the fifth season.
Can’t believe we’re in a new season already. Oshi No Ko is an obvious must-watch for me. Otherwise feels a little lighter, which is great. Might catch up on last season a bit.
Dungeon People and Parry Everything look like they’ll be pretty good, but otherwise, I agree
Oshi no Ko and Tower of God are probably my most anticipated. Pseudo Harem is one of my favorite manga, so I enjoyed the first episode a lot. Out of the other premieres I have seen so far, probably Dungeon People was my favorite.
The true wildcard this season is going to be Nokotan.
