  • I’m older than you my friend, and it’s acurallt only something that I came to terms with in my 40s. When I was younger I did feel that pressure and expectation to complete stuff. Now I have no issue switching a movie off after an hour or stopping a book before the end. Life’s too short! And sure a story game I’m really enjoying, why wouldn’t i finish it? And play the sequel! But if I’ve played 100+ hours of skyrim without geting close to the end, and I don’t think it reduced my enjoyment. And if I’m getting bored of a metrovania I don’t see the point in grinding til it’s done.

  • Nah, finishing games is overrated. By the time you’re halfway through a game, you’ve seen a lot of what it’s going to offer in terms of style and gameplay. For sure, you’ll miss some amazing stuff if you don’t get to the end, but it’s hard to believe you miss as much as the new other game you could have half-completed in the same time.

There are exceptions, and I defintely think completing at least a few games is important. But if I had the choice of only having fully played 20 games in my entire life, or 40 halfway, I’d defintely have learned more, experienced more and enjoyed myself more with the half-assed approach.

  • Fish changing sex is the most common, with pronounced physical sex changes. But they also usually simultaneously change gender, starting to behave in the manner associated with their new sex.

And there is some interesting examples of changes that seem to be more gender based. This study discusses behavior changes in wrasses where “male-typical behaviors such as courtship and aggression” start being seen in certain female fish, leading to changes in social status, before any noticeable changes to gonadal organs (the glands that produce many of the sex hermones).

  • I guess he is a relevant expert? And I think his tone suggests his judgement on the matter’s bullshitosity.

Alan MacLeod is Senior Staff Writer for MintPress News. He completed his PhD in 2017 and has since authored two acclaimed books: Bad News From Venezuela: Twenty Years of Fake News and Misreporting and Propaganda in the Information Age: Still Manufacturing Consent, as well as a number of academic articles. • Done! I like the look of it, the black is great for oled. I’m pretty committed to boost, but I’ll give blorp a good try, and it is already making me resent the charcoal theming in boost…

Update: Is there a way to include the community and post title when I see my posts and comments in my Profile? When I go to Inbox I see all the replies to my stuff, and the context. But when I look at my profile it’s just a wall of text seperate with some lines, no indication of community, upvotes, whether it’s a post or a comment. If I use the filter tap for Posts, it’s much like what I’d expect with communities and votes, but the Comments tab is also a wall of text with no details.

For me, that’s a big downside as I often go back to old threads I’ve contributed to because I want to see if there’s been other replies or to find a interesting point someone made.

Sheep are really friendly. I guess as herd animals they are very affectionate if they trust you, and very wary if they don’t know you. Try throwing them some dried corn a few times, they’ll fall in love with you and be eating out your hand and wanting cuddles in no time.

  • I enjoyed that. I could go to the Wikipedia front page and click a random article, but (for me) flicking quickly between some topics until being interested in an ancient Mayan aristocrat and reading about her, is a content delivery service that works for me.

I get why folks might hate it, or not need it, but I often look to my phone as a randomising information delivery system. I can always look into stuff I’m interested in, but I need the chance of being introduced to topics that would never occur to me. Journalism and social media can provide a route to that, but there’s something to be said for scrolling through topics until I find something that intrigues me, instead of preferencing whatever promotes engagement on Lemmy (or wherever).

To be fair, most cats ‘train’ every day, they just sleep in between. If you ate a controlled diet, spent most of the day sleeping, interspersed with some stretching and running and jumping on things, you’d be I’m pretty great shape.

You don’t need to personally own companies in those industries. The secret of insider trading is knowing what announcements will effect stock prices. If the government says that they’re going to ban cigarettes, the value of tobacco companies will fall. If I know that the government isn’t serious, and will never implement the ban, I can buy stock at a reduced rate safe in the knowledge that it’s real value hasn’t fallen.

If i run the government there’s countless ways to profit from that insider knowledge. Gold prices go up when the stock markets are uncertain and people are worried about financial choas. So, I could buy lots of gold ($2300 an oz in Jun 2024), then make some wild decisions and statements so that the markets start panicking, and watch the gold price rise (peaked at around $3400 last month) . So I sell my gold for a substantial profit, and dial back a bunch of the most wild policies and stuff goes mostly back to normal, but I’m a lot richer.
