Yeah that’s kind of where I’m at. KDE has been pretty right-on for as long as I can recall, and it looks like at the moment they’re just discussing AI broadly, which I personally don’t think is an unreasonable thing to do, but even that’s enough to get everyone riled up at the moment. Obviously if they actually do something sketchy like adding AI slop into Plasma then I’ll revise my opinion, but it doesn’t look to me like they’ve done anything especially egregious so far.

2·14 天前That’s what I assume - like if your studio is going under anyway and MS is the only one to make an offer, you might be able to keep the place running for another year of so, give everyone a buffer and maybe finish whatever you were working on. I would figure it’s not a long-term strategy though, more just slowing the collapse.

4·19 天前And I’m sure there’s no chance the info won’t just be sold off to some AI company at the first possible opportunity. Also a reminder that when Musk was doing his DOGE thing they were just dropping into government offices and installing their own servers that do who-knows-what.

15·19 天前It also drives me nuts as a non-American that random states in America can pass laws that I then have to deal with.
I mean I already use Linux but I’m sure I’m going to bump into this somewhere eventually. I think this might be the final straw though, I pretty much don’t use any social media as it is, this might be the thing that just makes me detach from the internet altogether, or as much as humanly possible at least.
I use Freetube and I consider not being able to comment (and comments being hidden by default) as a bonus feature.
My website is older than YouTube lol
I switched from Mullvad to IVPN after the Mullvad troubles. IVPN seems good to so far, does everything I need and hasn’t been proven untrustworthy/politically dodgy yet.
$1859 for the 1tb. I’m good lol
As a heads up for everyone recommending Immich: for the last little while, it’s been owned by FUTO, a company that has apparently ties to both Peter Thiel and Curtis Yarvin.
FUTO’s association with controversial political figures, particularly Curtis Yarvin, has become a flashpoint in the discussion. Yarvin’s self-described fascist views and his platforming on FUTO channels have led many in the community to question the organization’s values and intentions.
No shade if anyone wants to use it anyway, but just mentioning it as it may be a privacy concern/could potentially become one in the future.

181·27 天前I heard someone say the other day that most of the time when there’s a ‘bad’ technology it starts off as something good that everyone likes, and gradually becomes bad over time, like social media. But AI is something a bit more rare in that it came out and the majority of people didn’t especially want or like it, but it really feels like it’s being ‘forced’ into existence, so to speak. Which makes me think there’s something else going on.
In that world they listened to the smart person and did what he said eventually, even though it was inconvenient for them. So they’re kind of doing better than us in that way.

11·1 个月前We’ve been boycotting US products in our house for a year or two now, since the last time Trump decided to be removedy towards Canada. However, reading about all the veggies and sketchy beef the last couple of weeks, it might become less a matter of ideology and more just about basic safety TBH.
I use Filen, I don’t know if they still do it but you used to be able to buy a lifetime plan for a one-time fee that was like 50-100GB or something like that, and you could stack them. So I just bought several during a Black Friday sale.

This is something I’ve wondered about with regards to all of this, especially in the open source community. If a large enough group of people thinks a project would be better with AI and the original project is resistant to it, then presumably by the general nature of open source they should be able to just fork it, make their AI version and see which is more popular. And if AI is so much better and faster, then that should rapidly become the dominant version.
However, I don’t recall that happening with any projects I’ve heard of, and I don’t really hear about much forking going on. I’m sure it’s happened somewhere, but to me it seems like the vast majority of stories I hear are about existing projects suddenly being deluged with AI until they get overwhelmed, and then descending into flame wars when they try to do something about it.
