Yeah but Newpipe works.
Yeah but Newpipe works.
it just freeloads
I watch a number of creators that YT has demonetized so I’m not worried about it.
YT can clearly see what people want in these apps. They simply need to provide the exact same functionality and set a price. They won’t though because they want control and data as well.
Youtube Premium offers a fraction of the benefits of something like Newpipe.
Also that the US has been at war for the past 20+ years and has very little to show for it’s efforts. People are war fatigued and want things sorted out at home because domestically things are terrible.
I agree. I refuse to watch ads or to pay for an experience that offers less than a fraction of what Newpipe offers. When Newpipe is no longer viable I’ll repurpose that time to chipping away at my reading list.
I know how VPNs work. When I connect to a VPN I trust that the provider doesn’t snoop on me, actually routes the traffic like they promise and combines my traffic effectively enough that it obfuscates my identity.
You also have to trust your vpns isp.
For “privacy” yes, almost entirely.
If your VPN isn’t routing to your home network so you can safely access selfhosted applications then you’re basically just sharing your traffic with a total stranger and trusting them not to run telemetry etc.
Self-hosting was always the intent. Open source ended up being a bonus. People 30 years ago wouldn’t understand why something like facebook would even need to exist. The internet is designed so literally everyone can have their own website.
It’s not outdated. The chance of a newer electronic communication method being ubiquitous and also relatively open (e.g. not associated directly with a company) is slim. PGP encryption (another “old” technology) solves the privacy nightmare piece. People just have to use it.
Also I recommend selfhosting email. Mailinabox.email is pretty brainless.
Why do people use these crap apps when podcasting is the only media which, from it’s inception, is entirely liberated? You can get a FLOSS app and access pretty much everything. Anything you can’t access doesn’t deserve your attention.
Bingo
:laughs in Newpipe:
They aren’t. Vaultwarden is the selfhosted version.
This is the stupid simple and stable solution. Nextcloud was always giving me grief but Radicale is rock solid
They will have to rip Bitwarden (soon Vaultwarden) from my cold dead hands.
Call or visit them in person.
Anyone using these services in current year is asking for this. If someone is not computer literate and “has” to use these unnecessary services because they can’t selfhost or whatever they need to recognize that total exploitation of their data is the cost and it will never, ever change unless you own your data on your own hardware.
I can’t reiterate enough how much the government will never ever solve this problem.
To be clear I wouldn’t give them my money even if they did offer all the same features.
