  • Dunno if other people have a faster way of finding out about potential data breaches, but for me, the original Bleeping Computer article about this showed up on my newsfeed and that’s how I found out about it, followed a few hours later by other sites parroting the same news while quoting the BC article. It wasn’t till I saw this post that I learned this breach is a fake, though. So, I’d say just keep an eye on your newsfeed and if you see something there, check any tech news communities and other relevant social media communities that you’re a part of for the same news and for further details.

Edit: There’s also sites like Have I Been Pwned where you can put in your email and get information on every known data breach involving your email address. The site can also notify you about any new data breaches where your email showed up in the affected data.

  • I don’t believe they’ve had any audits or court cases at any point. Generally, I view it as a bad thing when a VPN company gets taken to court or otherwise involved with the authorities, since it indicates they’re in the crosshairs of the government and private lobbying interests, so the fact that they’ve gone under the radar all these years (they were established in 2010) is a plus in my opinion. I suppose a third party audit wouldn’t hurt though.

I still switched to them despite the lack of any audit though because from what I’d read on their about us page, the company was established by privacy activists and hackivists, so that was enough for me to trust them, personally. I tend to trust idealist types over finance-driven entities that run tech companies in the pursuit of profit rather than true ideals like the preservation of a free and open internet. I don’t fault you for going for a higher standard than that though, at least when it comes to proof.

  • So it does. This app also has a very slick UI that looks great, though I’m not a fan of the swipe gestures for everything model, and it appears to be impossible to go to someone’s profile from a comment, block the person, get the permalink for the comment, select text, or anything else the other apps can do. Gonna poke around in the settings and see if there’s something I’m missing here, but so far it’s missing a few too many features to be worth it, imo. Thanks for the suggestion though, always good to try new Lemmy apps.

  • It does not, at least not front and center the way Jerboa does. I found no option to show downvotes directly when I used it for about a week or so. I reinstalled it just now to see if that changed and it hasn’t. Only way to see downvotes is to press the 3 dots on a post or a comment, press “nerd stuff” then press “counts” to see upvotes and downvotes. This is an annoying hassle to have to do on every comment and post, and there’s no option to just show it in the UI instead of 3 menus deep.
