Technology@lemmy.world•GoPro is in serious financial trouble. Action camera giant is at risk for potential bankruptcyEnglish
23·1 month agoMy last experience with gopro was many years ago trying to get a firmware update for one of my hero 3’s. The download links for the firmware was there, but broken. It needed the attention of someone on their web management team.
I tried to get support via email but was told I had to go to the community forums for the issue. I found a thread of dozens of other users also pinging support and complaining of a broken link.
That thread went unanswered by support for months if not a year or two. I think it eventually got fixed, but it put such a bad taste in my mouth that so many people reported that their site was broken and they just ignored it. It was probably something simple like a bad character in the page code somewhere. I decided I wasn’t going to support this sort of behavior and have not spent any additional money with the company since then.
It’s no surprise to hear they’re struggling financially. When you cater to the premium market space, you have to provide premium service.

Technology@lemmy.world•ReFS is better than NTFS, but Microsoft refuses to let regular users have itEnglish
153·4 months agoThis. NTFS is still the gold standard for stability. ReFS is meant for data ops, and while it’s fairly stable, and offers a lot of advantages, it’s not perfect and can suffer greatly if used incorrectly. Until the quirks are gone, users are probably better off with NTFS for a lot of reasons.

Technology@lemmy.world•How Did TVs Get So Cheap? - by Brian PotterEnglish
32·6 months agoWe finally had to break down and accept a smart TV as our last purchase. I didn’t want anything like that on my network. It never gets updates, it never talks to home, it never asks me to agree to anything. The way a display should be.
I do have a few IOT monitors, but they are relegated to the banishment VLAN and are unaware there is anything else on network in the house.
For those who want an dumb TV, you want to shop for a commercial signage display. It’s what a TV should be.
Projectors are also a good option if you want a huge picture with a simple display.

politics @lemmy.world•Trump signs executive order reclassifying cannabis, opening door to broader weed accessEnglish
1·7 months agoDon’t stop your opponent from making a mistake / furthering your own cause for you if it’s a net gain. It’s still a step in the right direction. It’s just clear it’s for ratings and nothing else. That man thinks of nothing but himself, this isn’t for you or I.
The beauty of science is its establishment of facts through trial and review. You cannot fake results long term. Unfortunately for us, scientific discipline is presently being ignored. I don’t think this will always be the case; I think it will be the case for a little while yet, until enough tire of it to make a difference. I think that’s finally starting to make an impact. This is an act of desperation, not kindness or progress.

politics @lemmy.world•Trump signs executive order reclassifying cannabis, opening door to broader weed accessEnglish
2·7 months agoMost people that want weed have it regardless of whether or not it’s legal. This isn’t going to do much for his numbers, if I had to guess. There’s a little benefit to research, but in the grand scheme of things, “insignificantly less illegal and still prohibited” is useless to the average citizen while the economy, the planet, our international relationships, and our ability to feed and shelter ourselves are all on fire. This is so little, so late, it’s clearly a thoughtless ploy to suck those approval ratings out from *under *the toilet and back *into *the toilet bowl.
