Pretty much this. I remember OG OkCupid and it was rad. It was a site ran by data nerds who wanted to help nerds find each other, and they wrote pretty frequent blog posts about their findings and how they were changing things up all for like ~$15 a month. All that started eroding until they got bought out by Match and its a cesspool of microtransactions now.

  • I have a friend who works in the R* office in Massachusetts. The whole fucking company sounds like an abject nightmare to work for. Between the Stasi-esque HR lady that wanders around making notes of who is at their desks, to the legions of indoctrinated kool-aid drinkers, onto the just bizarre behind the scenes decisions and poor management.

He’s been dreading this announcement for a while now, and it may just be the one thing that will rip the scales off the otherwise creepily loyal workers.

Sounds like my Unifi experience with the old CloudKeys that liked to brick themselves if the wind blew in a way they disliked. Everything still ran fine, but I couldn’t manage any of it till I factory reset it all. I think it ran like that for 3mo before I could be bothered 😅

QNAP at least used to make pretty powerful NASs. I had one with an older Xeon in it that I bought in like 2015 that at the time crushed Plex streaming. Not sure if they still do, I also moved to Unraid and will never look back, it’s exactly what I need and none of what I don’t (literally, raid. Don’t care about IOPs).

Actually ran Unraid on the Xeon QNAP for a year or so before building my own box.

  • Can confirm Amon Amarth 100% not white supremacists, they have spoken out about how much they utterly despise they appropriation of their cultural heritage for racist purposes.

Buying their merch is super tricky as a white dude who lives in New England. Was at their show recently and most of their shirts have giant Mjolnir on them, and YOU and I know it isn’t being used by racists, but a random on the street wouldn’t 😅. Did end up with a rad hoodie with stylized Geri and Freki though.

  • When adding/removing disks you do have to rebuild parity, but it’s not the end of the world and it handles it automatically. I run parity checks pretty often anyway (every other week) and it takes the same amount of time.

I just like the Unraid UI and Docker implementation tbh. I used to run everything off Portainer/Compose on my QNAP which was great, but these days I am lazy and having an Update All button is 🤌
