Nice thing is, usually the dumb phones have removable batteries. So just remove the battery when you’re not using it. Problem solved.

Linux@lemmy.ml•Office workers - Has anyone here convinced their boss to let them install a Linux distro on their work desktop?
1·3 months agoFuck that, I ain’t no slave. My only option under the current system is to sell myself. Funny thing is though, is that I’m a human fucking being, so I get to make decisions.
like putting Linux on my work laptop.

1·3 months agoInstalling Linux would remove all of that software. Your computer essentially disappears from/stops reporting to their systems. It would likely get removed after a while of inactivity as the lists are cleaned up. All IT jobs ive worked they like to keep the list of computers as alive as possible so that means cleaning up dead or unresponsive computers.

1·3 months agoI work IT at a college. I don’t really keep any important data on my device. It’s all either on OneDrive or Teams, which is OneDrive, or maybe a Share.
I’m not too worried about it.
It may be their computer, but it’s my time I’m spending on it. And if I’m going to be doing that it’s not going to be on Windows.
I don’t want Microsoft hearing my voice or collecting any biometric data. I don’t want anything to do with them. They can screw right off. If my job doesn’t value that/me, then bye.

1·3 months agoI authenticate just fine. Most of our stuff is in the cloud and web based. There’s Teams for Linux, OneDrive for Linux. I use LibreOffice, and then the rest I just use the web version.
Outlook, I use the web version. Same with all the shares and print stuff.

3·3 months agoIt’s definitely doable. There’s plenty of companies and governments in Europe that have made the switch to open source away from Microsoft.

3·3 months agoYou deserve to have an OS that doesnt spy on you. As well if you install linux then your company can’t spy on you either.

6·3 months agoI didn’t convince anyone, I just did it.
As soon as microsoft announced the recall feature I was like nope this I aint consenting to that even at work. I put Nixos/Gnome on my work laptop and haven’t looked back. Everytime I help someone on their windows 11 laptop it feels like a snails pace.
I wish I could convince our workplace to switch to linux. I feel like Nixos would be PERFECT for the workplace, you could just deploy like a standard config and add more apps if needed.
It would make all the software requests super easy. (given they were FOSS ofc. Even most windows apps work using Wine or Proton tbh.) I don’t use any closed source apps on my laptop, but others could.

PC Gaming@lemmy.ca•When Microsoft finally pulls the plug on Windows 10 its successor will be four years old, and for three of those, it was never the OS of choice amongst Steam usersEnglish
132·5 months agoI put my work computer on Linux(NixOS) lol. When I do IT for users on Win 11 I’m constantly like "Why is this so slowwww? ".

PC Gaming@lemmy.ca•What people miss about Steam Deck's "loss" to NintendoEnglish
9·6 months agoI think they mean Steam won’t be on the Switch. Sure, some games will be on both Steam and Switch, but eventually once they can emulate the Switch two, you’ll have every Nintendo game on the emulator, whereas you’ll only have a handful of games on the Switch.
I’m guessing if you were the last person to close this session, all chat would be lost, unless you saved it to the file.
OP mentioned that they were working on a self-host version that persists.

91·7 months agoneeds federation and then my users will use it.
For now, they want me to go with Matrix.
Yeah just use the default setup. Some minor tweaks at first, then it stays the same forever.
Once you get it setup tho, it works the same forever.

Rendering is not what you are doing server side.
Servers would just be checking to make sure a player can actually do something and if they can’t don’t let the client do it. Then any changes made client side would only affect the player making the changes.
It boggles my mind Riot would rather use a hacky method like kernel level anti-cheat instead of just having the servers mirror the game logic and confirm everything. Its all about saving money at our expense.
