Programming@programming.dev•Someone got Doom in an SQL databaseEnglish
334·2 天前Not everyone calls it “sequel” https://learnsql.com/blog/sql-or-sequel/
If you want to be really pedantic, you could argue that Server Query Language (SQL) and Server English QUEry Language (SEQUEL) refers to two different things.

Selfhosted@lemmy.world•Old laptop with non-funtional display... What do I turn it intoEnglish
8·4 天前It sounds like your issue might be a bad ribbon cable, connector, or some other easy fix. Getting the display working might be doable with reasonable effort. If not, you can make it a:
Minecraft (or any game you like) server.
Steam remote play host machine. Let the laptop do the processing and send the video signal to a lower-performance client.
Load movies onto an external drive. Load emulators onto the hard drive. Use it as a media PC and emulation station.
Video editing machine.
Either way, make sure whatever screen you hook up to it has at least a 60 hertz refresh rate.
If you stream, a lot of streamers use a second machine to record, manage the stream, run the webcam, etc. allowing their main machine to prioritize rendering the game; you could use it for that.

Programming@programming.dev•FTC chair suggests AI developers should be liable for conduct of agentsEnglish
22·9 天前Over 99.9% of gun owners do so responsibly, without hurting anyone or breaking any laws. To tell 99.9% of people they’re not allowed to do something becasue less than 0.1% of people abused their right to it, should be a very concerning idea to anyone who claims to live in a free society.
If it was a simple matter of availability, then other countries with just high and higher rates of gun ownership as the US would see the same violence problems. But, that isn’t the case, those countries don’t have the same problems as the US.
All bans do is make people feel better about “solving” a problem without committing real time, money, and effort to an actual solution. I don’t want to see another gun ban because I’d rather see something happen that will actually reduce instances of gun violence.
A problem with gun violence isn’t a problem with guns, it’s a problem with violence. Treat the underlying issues of violence: poverty, unemployment, homelessness, drug addiction, and mental health, and the problem will be solved.

Programming@programming.dev•FTC chair suggests AI developers should be liable for conduct of agentsEnglish
5·10 天前Forget about the machine. If the gun is in your hand, is it the gun’s fault if you shoot somebody?
gastroglizzy@piefed.socialto
Programming@programming.dev•FTC chair suggests AI developers should be liable for conduct of agentsEnglish
103·10 天前That’s exactly the way it should be. I don’t get to program a computer to steal money, then blame the computer for the stolen money.
HOWEVER, I couldn’t help but notice this part:
“If someone tells a tool to do something, and the tool does it, I don’t think we would say, ’Oh, what do we do about the tool?’”
and think of gun control.
Guns are tools; they don’t do anything they aren’t told to do. And yet, when someone tells a gun to shoot another person, we do say, “Oh, what can we do about the tool?” and the answer is usually “ban it.” Why?
If this line of thinking is so obvious when it comes to AI, why is it the opposite when it comes to guns?
I don’t get to say, “That crazy gun just broke loose, went off the rails all by itself and shot somebody.” We all understand the gun didn’t do anything, the shooter did. Thus, solutions should focus on the shooter, not the gun.
Violence is the problem, not the tool used to do it. Treat the underlying causes of violence: poverty, homelessness, unemployment, drug addiction, and mental health, if you want to solve the violence problem.

Technology@beehaw.org•New Mexico jury finds Facebook liable for over 43 million violations of consumer protection law—and Meta could owe over $200 billion in penaltiesEnglish
7·10 天前There are many reasons for that.
Meta wants to choose which regulations are applied to all social media platforms because they know which regulations they and their competition can/not easily comply with. They want to make themselves look trustworthy for regulating themselves, while mitigating AI scrapers and fake accounts throwing off their engagement metrics, while giving themselves very lax regulations, while also weaponizing our government to apply burdensome regulations to their competitors.

Not The Onion@lemmy.world•People hooked on vapes try a new way to quit: cigarettes | Hacker NewsEnglish
352·15 天前You’re right about all of that, but cigarettes can still make quitting easier for some people.
When I was quitting nicotine, I switched to vaping and my habit got worse for three reasons that are unique to vaping:
- E-liquid concentrations
- Increased convenience
- No visual cue to stop
E-liqiuds concentrations let you get a much higher dose of nicotine in a single hit. I forget the exact numbers, but I remember doing the math on the back of an envelope back then and even 8mg/mL (the “standard” dosage) was nearly twice as much nicotine per puff out of my rig, the way I smoked it. I don’t think most people go through all that so they probably don’t realize what their nicotine intake is while vaping.
You can vape in way more places than you can smoke. Is it too hot, too cold, or too rainy outside? No problem, just hit the vape; you don’t even have to get up from the couch. At work and having a craving? Just step into the bathroom and sneak a few quick puffs. Having a craving but don’t to stink up your car? Just hit the vape, now it smells like grape.
Finally, once you get into a rhythm, a cigarette eventually ends, but a vape will keep supplying you nicotine until you get sick. By the time you run out of juice or the battery dies, you’ve consumed several packs worth of nicotine.
With cigarettes, you know there’s a consistent amount of nicotine in each one, so you can track how much you’ve had and control your intake more precisely than with a vape. You can say, “I smoked four cigarettes yesterday, so let’s try only three cigarettes today.” It’sdifficultto do the same with a vape. Also, the inconvenience of having to smoke outside is helpful in resisting cravings.
Even though they’re unquestionably less healthy, I definitely understand why some people find them helpful when trying to wean off nicotine. They were the way I started and, after many, many attempts, finally the way I quit. I’m retired from smoking for about five years now.
I find that saying something like, “My ears seem to be moving faster than my brain today. Can we try this another time?” is a good way to indicate you’re interested in learning what they’re saying while acknowledging you’re having a hard time comprehending it at that moment.
Most people understand that our brains shut off sometimes; “the lights are on, but nobody’s home.” Most people also know good and well when someone doesn’t understand something. Acknowledging these human traits may be uncomfortable, but it’s better than trying to lie to someone who knows better.

science@lemmy.world•Human brain is actually two separate organs, scientists findEnglish
39·17 天前I think this lends a lot more credibility to the idea that the two halves of ancient humans’ brains weren’t connected (called the “bicameral mind”), and references to “gods” during that time period were hallucinations from the disconnected half.
References to “the gods abandoning me/us” were people describing what it was like to experience the two halves connect, leading to the disappearance of the hallucinations.
References to searching for people who are “still connected to the gods” means they’re looking for people who still have a bicameral mind and experience the hallucinations.

Machine Learning is a kind of AI. LLMs are but one kind of Machine Learning Model. All LLMs are Machine Learning models, but not all Machine Learning models are LLMs. LLMs are one kind of AI, but not all AI is an LLM.
They’re different words for a reason. If they were all the same thing, we wouldn’t give them different names. It’s completely possible and understandable that someone would find one acceptable but not the other.
