Technology@lemmy.world•Automakers Are Sharing Consumers’ Driving Behavior With Insurance CompaniesEnglish
2·2 years agoIf I were malicious enough to design the system, I would make it a heartbeat. Skip too many heartbeats and your car bricks. It could be written in to the terms of the loan since companies are using in-car computers for repossession.
“Why is my car bricked?”
“Because you tried to disable our payment verification system.”
“I live in a rural area.”
“You’re like 1% of customers. Your loan contact says you have to drive within cell range once a month. Fuck you, we’re repossessing the car and keeping the money anyway.”

World News@lemmy.ml•Erdogan says Turkey firmly backs Hamas leaders
2·2 years agoExactly. His relationship with the US is just as cynical as it is with Russia, and as it is with any country or people (including his own). He will do or say anything that gets him more power. That means he’ll be a solid US ally as long as the US is completely stable and functional, and he will take advantage of any weakness (like he did with Trump letting him murder Kurds in Syria).
I think we’re in violent agreement about the overall with perhaps subtle difference in the details.

World News@lemmy.ml•Erdogan says Turkey firmly backs Hamas leaders
22·2 years agoErdogan has been close to Putin for a long time. He’s one of the most extreme authoritarians in the NATO alliance. The US has armed it’s enemies in the past, and I don’t think it’s short sightedness has changed.
I don’t believe that Erdogan will help Palestinians, but he very well may materially support Hamas as long as he doesn’t do it openly enough to cause problems. I mean, Netanyahu propped up Hamas for years in order to forward his interests. No one would care if Erdogan helped justify continuing the genocide by making Hamas more dangerous to Israelis, as long as he didn’t send any American weapons to them.
But perhaps I’m just extremely cynical.

World News@lemmy.ml•Erdogan says Turkey firmly backs Hamas leaders
101·2 years agoIt would have been more accurate for me to say that he’s not really aligned with anyone. He works with Israel and the US when it benefits him, he works with Russia and Hamas when it benefits him. He does whatever will get him more regional power.

World News@lemmy.ml•Erdogan says Turkey firmly backs Hamas leaders
155·2 years agoErdogan is a fascist who’s responsible for genocide in Northern Syria. He doesn’t give a fuck about Palestinians or the genocide Israel is carrying out against them. He is aligned with Hamas and terrorism because disrupts regional power and gives him opportunities. This is an opportunity for him, and nothing more. His government backed Isis before. This is the same.
It has nothing to do with the very real need to end the genocide of Palestinians or the legitimate desire of Palestinians to resist their oppression. He aligns himself with horrible people because he is himself horrible.

Technology@lemmy.world•Public trust in AI is sinking across the boardEnglish
183·2 years agoPeople who understand technology know that most of the tremendous benefits of AI will never be possible to realize within the griftocarcy of capitalism. Those who don’t understand technology can’t understand the benefits because the grifters have confused them, and now they think AI is useless garbage because the promise doesn’t meet the reality.
In the first case it’s exactly like cryptography, where we were promised privacy and instead we got DRM and NFTs. In the second, it’s exactly like NFTs because people were promised something really valuable and they just got robbed instead.
Management will regularly pass over the actual useful AI idea because it’s really hard to explain while funding the complete garbage “put AI on it” idea that doesn’t actually help anyone. They do this because management is almost universally not technically competent. So the technically competent workers who absolutely know the potential benefits are still not able to leverage them because management either doesn’t understand or is actively engaging in a grift.
Also fellow emacs user, I see.
Why is “the most incompetent fascist alive can’t use Windows” a Linux meme?
Yeah, there are lots of people who’ve said this and are not also fascists. There’s no reason to platform this scumbag.

A Boring Dystopia@lemmy.world•Schools in America apparently have their own army recruiter
3·2 years agoI went to school in a dirt poor place. Like half of my graduating class joined the military. Recruiters were in the halls like every week. Yeah, it’s absolutely intentional.

World News@lemmy.ml•Israeli rappers call for death of Dua Lipa, Bella Hadid and Mia Khalifa in chart-topping anthem
2·2 years agoNot directly, but they have an indirect effect. The more one aligns with the state, especially in a fascist state like Israel, the less likely they are to experience violence. The less trauma they have. The more access they have to good and stable jobs.
So oppositional groups tend to be more fragmented (so more subcultures) and have less money. So, no, not directly but there’s definitely an indirect relationship.

World News@lemmy.ml•Israeli rappers call for death of Dua Lipa, Bella Hadid and Mia Khalifa in chart-topping anthem
74·2 years agoGovernments and their people rarely agree. Those that do agree are a vocal minority that’s always amplified. While I don’t believe Israel should exist, a county isn’t it’s government and its dominant group.
There are Israelis risking prison and possibly their lives trying to stop what their government is doing.

World News@lemmy.world•'You are responsible for the Oct 7 holocaust': Thousands protest against Netanyahu's gov'tEnglish
1·2 years agoWhat the fuck are you talking about? Likud undermined the peace process repeatedly and basically drove Hamas to attack, which is exactly what these folks are saying. Likud is also pushing this party line. The actual Holocaust wasn’t in response to years of oppression. Using the “holocaust” language is antisemetic because it compares a horrific act of oppression to a horrific act in response to horrific oppression. These two should never be compared.

World News@lemmy.world•'You are responsible for the Oct 7 holocaust': Thousands protest against Netanyahu's gov'tEnglish
103·2 years agoIt seems like Israelis who disagree with Likud are completely in the propaganda. The “Holocaust” language seems to be their propaganda. To be fair, it was a massive attack that impacted pretty much every Israeli. With something that personal, it’s easy to turn around and use the language of the people who are ultimately responsible for this attack in the first place.

Technology@lemmy.world•Police Departments Are Turning to AI to Sift Through Millions of Hours of Unreviewed Body-Cam FootageEnglish
4·2 years agoSo funny thing, Seattle Police Department did a pilot for AI that did sentiment analysis on police audio and looked for things like racial slurs. They pretty quickly disbanded the project and destroyed the evidence.
(IIRC some folks requested info from the pilot and they claimed to have deleted it.)

Myspace existed for a really long time after it ceased to be relevant. It actually only ceased to be relevant after they lost all the music that had been uploaded. That’s when independent musicians finally abandoned it, and it basically disappeared.
Reporting on “X” is what’s keeping it alive, IMHO. Stop reporting on it and it will stop being used. Alternatively, if there’s some major incident, that would probably be enough to finish it. It may eventually go bankrupt between now and then, but it’s actually pretty useful for people wanting to spread nazi propaganda so the far right will probably keep pumping money in until it collapses.
