How slow are we talking? All my GOG downloads through Heroic have always been as fast as my connection allows. It sounds like there may be another issue at play.
Is there a VPN involved?
It’s the same sense of the word. In language terms, meta is self-referential. In gaming terms, the metagame is the game within the game.
Often, games turn into a rock-paper-scissors format where three different strategies fight for dominance to the exclusion of anything non-meta.
The meta becomes the meta because as people start using it, it becomes required to win.
It doesn’t mean you can’t play without it, you just can’t be competitive without it. Some people want to have fun playing games, and some people want to be good at games. And some people can’t have fun unless they’re winning.

361·6 days agoThat was always allowed, even for the non-autopen ones. In fact, I think lots of people are surprised it hasn’t happened sooner.
The whole point of an EO is that it’s supposed to be just a policy, not a law. The next government coming in can just cancel all these policies and institute new ones.

Steam Hardware@sopuli.xyz•External storage on Steam OS is a problem
5·10 days agoPart of the issue is that Linux does not auto-mount connected drives unless specifically configured to. So every time you boot your Steam Deck, the drive is detected but not mounted.
Normally, you do this via the fstab file. I’ll admit I’m not sure how well that works with an external drive.

Not The Onion@lemmy.world•Fact check: Is Mamdani introducing Arabic numerals to New York schools?English
5·14 days agoI don’t think the article is calling people dumb. It only states objective facts, and I think it was pretty good at NOT suggesting people are dumb. Ignorant perhaps, but it does stick to the facts (and some fluff to pad the page.)

PC Gaming@lemmy.ca•Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 just won every award it was nominated for at The Golden Joystick Awards [Ultimate GoTY, Storytelling, Visual Design, Studio of the Year, Supporting/Lead Performer]English
6·14 days agoI haven’t played Outer Worlds 2, but the other two, while both great, just didn’t have what it takes to beat it IMO.
That’s not to say my opinion is objectively right, it’s really a subjective question to begin with.
I’m running it on Bazzite, and it mostly runs great.
I’ve been dealing with a bug that has apparently been around since the beta, but it’s not Linux-specific. Sometimes, the game crashes due to a corrupted file. Verifying the install from Steam fixes the issue, but it seems to pop up randomly. I’ve had days without issues, and days where it happens 2-3 raids in a row.

PC Gaming@lemmy.ca•Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 just won every award it was nominated for at The Golden Joystick Awards [Ultimate GoTY, Storytelling, Visual Design, Studio of the Year, Supporting/Lead Performer]English
9·14 days agoThat’s a fair assessment for the most part. I think a lot of the time it’s all just hype for one title, but this game is actually fantastic, and I think it deserves everything it won. I can’t think of anything else this year that would surpass Clair Obscur in any of those categories.
Honestly, the most complicated part is getting the install media ready to go.
Once the installer starts, you’re just answering prompts like the local username and password you want, language and keyboard layout, and time zone, and it does the rest on its own.
Then the computer reboots, and you end up on the desktop of a fully usable computer. Most distros will have a one-time popup welcoming you and maybe leading you to some Flatpak “store” where you can search for free apps to install.

A Boring Dystopia@lemmy.world•The rich are ‘renting’ out their idle gold bars for income as prices remain at historic highs
3·17 days agoBasically the borrowers are using gold-to-gold loans instead of cash loans to buy gold to avoid problems like price fluctuations.
They’re using the gold for jewelry making or industrial processes, and then returning different gold with interest paid back in gold.
So the lenders are lending out gold, and getting back more gold as interest with no money changing hands.

PC Gaming@lemmy.ca•Valve Claims Steam Machine Outperforms 70% of Current Gaming PCsEnglish
6·17 days agoWith AAA game graphics, 4K is kind of silly.
It kind of makes sense on consoles with fixed hardware when the devs design specifically to hit that target.
On a PC, I think high framerate 1440p is a much more reasonable goal, but frame generation and upscaling are sold to consumers like some magical solution to poor performance instead.

Yes, they’ve been buying up smaller studios for decades and shutting them down.
There’s an entire wikipedia page about it.
