Finland had to close their borders recently due to a migrant influx, which they have since opened. Wonder where they’ll live, and who will pay for it, what services will the funding be redirected from, and what magical insta-build housing they’ll live in (it takes 18 months to build a 20+ unit complex after a quick Google).

My response was to Quebec city, expanded to “how could a nation even manage this from start to finish, nevermind a city”. I like this sarcastic attack on my person, though. This is precisely why I didn’t engage. If one says anything but “homelessness bad, housing good”, the internet megaminds come out and try to apply their critical thinking skills. Housing is a right, not an investment vehicle. The entire industry from building, selling, buying and renting needs a reset. Short term rentals need their own zoning type at a minimum, residential zoning should remain residential. There are some really papers out of McGill and university of Uppsala on financialization of housing and it’s effect on affordability. There is so much shit to do on this topic and everyone is stuck at bleeting “build more homes” on the internet.

Unfortunately as I expected, the replies are just more questions.

Downvote the shit out of me, but explain how this works in the above case where one (let’s even expand it a bit and say) nation chooses to do this, and everyone homeless around the world with the means to make the journey, decides to head down there and enter the country by whatever means? We’re not talking about a taxpayer base, just a whole ton of people that want homes, and of course some small subset of those people that want free homes. People seems to scoff at the “it’s a complex problem” thing because they don’t think of the solution to homelessness within the confines of reality.

Iceland is in their own dumpster fire with housing. You’re better off in continental Europe if you can get a visa. You also have the New Zealand working holiday option, which is a good time. I toyed with Iceland and have close friends there, it’s rough to get housing, cost of living is expensive because everything is shipped in.

Because you’re saying “don’t worry about the already built housing people sit on for short term rentals, those don’t count” they do count, there are a lot of them. How long would it take to build 9100 units in Toronto vs immediately dumpstering the airbnbs and forcing sale or long term rentals. There’s a part of the issue that you just might not be aware of, it’s the fucking vacant homes that sit there empty, making loads of cash during busy season.

You’re right, building more is good, but without bans on short term rentals and proper regulations around multi home ownership we’re just gonna build more units for landlords.

I’d love to see what kind of impact Toronto would have if those 9100 dwellings would be available to Torontonians. That’s about 56 dense,mid rise apartment buildings of housing.

Warframe never had this level of bullshit. The ratio of cash:dev lead time wasn’t remotely close. I played Warframe for ages and their funding model very quickly crystalized into a very transparent and rewarding model. “Wanna support us? Buy skins, frame slots, gun slots, etc” their early funding didn’t even register as a blip on the radar when compared to the sheer millions of dollars dumped into SC just so they can deliver nothing close to their promise.

The “this is the present” schtick is nice and all but that exact same “niche” audience that’s waiting for sc is waiting in Eve online, for it’s true successor and are getting more and more disenfranchised. That money has a negative impact on me directly because those millions could have gone to a better place for gamer, instead of being in perpetual escrow In a tech-demo-game that is now filled by such zealots that any mention of refusal to accept this so called new dogshit status quo gets their Spidey Senses tingling the same way a Musk enthusiast rallies to defend him.

You care that the bloggers, influencers and convention staff are getting jobs to shovel this game, that’s cool, you’ve spent time in the industry and they’re maybe your people. I’m not going to put a gun to my own head and say that giving people jobs is a bad move in trying to counter this point.

All the stuff you’re talking about in your last paragraph, SC isn’t going to avoid any of it from where I’m standing. It’s either going to flame out on launch, or it’s going to be jam packed with the original whales that will grief beyond all measure.

The second half I don’t dispute, people play it and enjoy it. The first part though I’m not sure about for myself, I don’t think I can play SC, certainly not the SC I paid for god knows how long ago. I can play a tech demo right now, and that’s just not enough.

I hope I cream my pantaloons when SQ42 actually lands. Until then, SC as a whole is far from what’s been promised.

Reminder that starfield is playable and enjoyable, with decent performance and a complete game with a shitload of missions. Can Starfield be better? Yeah, and I think it probably will be with a bit if time. Is the space combat a little bit dogshit with really nice audio design? Yeah, it sure is. Is it actually out, playable, with boarding and ship building? Yep, sure seems like it.

I don’t even know why you threw this example out there for a single player game that’s pretty much what everyone expected from a AAA studio in the current “optimize every dev hour per dollar” bottom line focused game dev style.
