I watched the first episode of this so I could watch the second, then almost didn’t bother with the second.

I get what they were trying to do, but the whole idea of the designated savior of humanity spending all of his time focused on being desperately self-conscious and bemoaning his failure to make friends was already a bit too much, then add in those grotesquely exaggerated reaction faces and to me it was just pretty much non-stop cringe.

On another note, I’ve been trying to remember where they stole that kaiju design from - that sort of whale-like body with a sort of Tyrannosaurus-shaped head, swimming through space. I know I’ve seen that one before, and relatively recently too.

Anyway - I decided what the hell and gave the second episode a chance, and at least it wasn’t quite as cringey. The reaction faces are still pretty awful, as is his laser focus on making friends and his cringey failures - like they decided the way to make this character memorable was to give him Bocchi traits and just crank them up to superhuman levels. But still, at least it wasn’t quite as cringey, and I noticed that the ED includes somewhat normal domestic scenes of him with some of the characters we met in the second episode, so hopefully they’ll stop beating us over the head with how cringey and pathetic and desperate he is and settle down into something decent. In any event, it’s enough that I suppose I’ll watch the next episode too.

This is actually much better than I expected.

The MC’s crippling shyness is worse than anything I’ve ever seen, but I can relate to it.

The checklist from the stupidly awful “how to make friends” self help book that he’s slavishly following is cleverly being used as episode titles.

From the MC reading the manual in a couple of minutes, and running off with the prototype robot, to calling out attacks, it’s a subtle love fest for giant robot tropes.

The animation is really interesting. The characters are all computer graphics, but they are expressive and have lots of personality.

The OP isn’t bad, but the ED is a rocking earworm, IMO.
