Senate Republicans do not have enough votes for cloture, a legislative procedure to end debate and move for a vote. Republicans only have a 53-47 seat majority, and 60 votes are needed to invoke cloture. If Democrats don’t provide enough votes for cloture, the government is almost certainly headed toward a shutdown Friday.

Despite promising a fight, Senate Democrats are reportedly considering a vote swap. In exchange for providing enough votes to end debate on the GOP spending bill, Senate Republicans would allow a Democratic amendment to continue to fund the government at current levels for the next month to come to the floor, known as a continuing resolution, or CR. The Democratic amendment is almost certain to fail.

Democrats opposed to the GOP bill would then be allowed to vote “no” on the broader spending bill, allowing them to seem like they’re voting against the GOP measure despite providing the needed support to bring it to the floor. Democrats have criticized the GOP plan, which would give Musk and Trump more power to slash the federal government and also cut $1 billion from Washington, D.C.’s local budget.

Nina Smith, a Democratic strategist, said this kind of wheeling and dealing is exactly why Americans have lost faith in the party.

It’s exactly like Collins and Manchin. They put up a big show of fighting and then just vote for it anyways.

The DNC must be abolished if this is their version of opposing the destruction of our civil service.

Seriously. They honestly think that they can help move along and destroy the country and that 1) everyone will forget in 18 months that they voted to capitulate and won’t remember if they voted for a shutdown, and 2) that they will STILL easily pick up wins in 2026 if they capitulate.

Continuing to help with Chump’s agenda at every opportunity.

Fucking feckless spineless wimps demonstrating once more they are not here for the fight, they are not here to attempt to save democracy, they are not here to help us.

In fact, I’ve no longer any idea what actual use Dems are anymore. 🤦‍♀️ 🤷‍♂️ 🖕 🖕

It’s long been said that the Democratic Party is the place that movements go to die. I have believed it since I started paying attention to politics in the late 80s and it has only gotten worse. Talked myself blue in the face about it for literal decades and was met with denial or the equivalent of people plugging their ears and going “NAH NAH NAH NAH NAH I CAN’T HEEEEEAR YOU!” And here we are today. I hate being proven correct.

“Always vote blue.” AKA, Stockholm syndrome. I always hated seeing people say that independently minded people are terrible for voting against the Geronocrats.

This is where unwavering loyalty has lead us: betrayal.

This article headline claims the opposite of what it sources state:

“I think we’re going to all be ‘no’ on cloture unless we get an agreement to propose at least this 30-day clean [continuing resolution] amendment and maybe a couple of others,” Sen. Tim Kaine of Virginia told reporters Thursday morning. “So we’ll be ‘no’ on cloture unless we get an agreement to do that. I’m not aware of whether the Republicans have agreed to that yet, but we’ll be ‘no’ on cloture if we don’t get it, and I think that’s a unified position.”

“There’s basically one path to keep the government from shutting down and one door to unlock, and Democrats have the keys,” he said. Thune filed cloture on the House-passed measure Thursday night, setting up a Friday vote.

No, that’s factually synonymous with what this article is stating, just a difference in presentation.

To rephrase Kaine’s comment with this article’s perspective

"I think we’re going to all be ‘no’ on cloture unless we get an agreement to [at least allow us to have this fake fight, then, yeah, enough of us will flip yes to get it across the finish line].

But this part was entirely made up and not stated by the source.

People talk about the Democratic senators like they are some independent force , but most of them are as incapable of action as their gop counterparts.

If you are commenting or reacting, take the 2 minutes to call your senators and tell them how useless Democrats are showing themselves to be. 5calls.org.
