“The Transit App” is probably not that privacy friendly right? Are there any open source and privacy respecting apps for getting bus/train times by location?
Most of the apps rely on contributors to provide supported locations. I was wondering if a dumb app where you provide the GTFS zip url of your city would be useful. Could work if you stay in your city a lot
e.g. most of what you see on https://www.transit.land/map#3.46/47.78/12.46 is GTFS (hopefully public urls)
KTrip’s not bad.
öffi is really good.

You can select the source of the info (for example set to your local provider api or just use default) and I like the schedule view very much.
I am not a software expert, but it is Foss and doesn’t require strange permissions.
Too bad it’s only for a handful of Western countries :( I hoped I wouldn’t have to look up bus arrivals in the browser anymore.
Damn. For us unlucky Americans, it only appears to support San Francisco, CA; Chicago, IL; and Austin, TX.
Came here to mention just this. Look up Öffi

Without knowing what area or type of transport you’re interested in that’s all I can give you.
I suggest browsing the apps available here:
Edit: I have no idea who would downvote this or why, but doing so is not helpful to anyone, in any way. If you have a question or concern, please just write it in a comment.
People are probably down voting you because pointing someone to fdroid in response to a question asking for specific recommendations for a transit application is also not particularly helpful. It’s like if someone asked what boat they should buy for Alaskan Crab fishing which has navigational equipment and sonar that can detect down to 100 meters, and in response someone pointed at the entire ocean and said “I suggest you look for one there”.
I disagree.
- OP wasn’t at all specific about what kind of transit app they were seeking, as others have noted.
- Whatever kind of privacy-friendly transit app they want, F-Droid is exactly the place to find it.
- There are only a handful of each type there. Comparing that to an ocean is absurd.
- Many people don’t know about F-Droid at all, and just need a pointer to it.
Despite disagreeing, I appreciate that you used your words. Thanks.
You’re allowed to disagree, but that’s not really what I am doing here in the first place. Regardless of objectivity I’m just surmising the reason you are getting down voted based on my impressions of the thread and communicating that to you as you seemed to have no idea as to why people were doing so. What I have stated is my best possible guess as to the why. I could be wrong as well - I’m just suggesting what I expect would be the reasoning.
