Nastya Buryk was just 4 years old when her mother, Mariya, noticed that something was seriously wrong.

Nastya went to a hospital in Odesa, where the family lived, but the kind of treatment recommended for her was not available there. Artem took a leave of absence from the (Ukrainian) military to be with his family and decide what to do.

The parents learned that they could get state-of-the-art treatment for Nastya in Israel. They decided Mariya would take their daughter there while Artem stayed behind to keep fighting.

On June 15, Iranian missiles struck the city of Bat Yam, a suburb of Tel Aviv where the family was staying.

The apartment where they lived had been partially destroyed in a missile strike, killing and injuring many civilians. Among the dead were Nastya, Mariya, Nastya’s grandmother, and the two young cousins.

The news reached Nastya’s father the next day, when the girl’s aunt called him. “She told me to sit down,” Artem said. “I sat down and she told me that a missile hit the building in Israel and killed everyone.”

Israel struck first, provoking a retaliatory strike. Israel is responsible for this child’s death.

Now let’s talk about the 335 bullets fired into Hind Rajab’s body from an Israeli tank, after she had called for help, spending hours surrounded by the bodies of her entire murdered family.

Or the countless Palestinian children being purposely starved, displaced, bombed, and shot constantly as IDF goons genocide and laugh about and mock their victims.

That’s fine. Iran didn’t fire missiles at Israel because of what they’re doing to Palestinians, though.

    Huh, a crossover episode.

What are we supposed to do with news like this? “Adults start senseless war, children suffer”, paste it in gothic letters across ad ribbons and billboards. People look at those, sometimes. Say “stand up”. Say “shout”, at foreign tyrants who will never hear it and can’t imagine what it would even mean to care.

This is just as sad as thousands of kids who died in Palestine or those who witnessed their loved ones torn to pieces right in front of their eyes. No more, no less.

What a sick and vile thing to say. This whole post is full of people celebrating Iran killing a kid and blaming it on Israel. It’s not that kid’s fault that Israel is killing other children.

What the fuck are you smoking?

One person said a Ukrainian kid dying is just as sad as a Palestinian kid dying, and you think that is a sick and vile thing to say? How incredibly racist are you?

I’m not being racist. Everyone here commenting is using these news to pass a political message. “Well, Israel shouldn’t have attacked.” “What about children in Gaza?” “Oh, so this kid is more important than others being killed by Israel.” Like, wtf is wrong you all you people to band up together to someway blame this kid for what Israel is doing? It all comes down to politics for you in the end. This kid had nothing to do with Israel politics, she was just trying to get a chance to live like everyone else in the world, even you yourselves! It’s like a school bus crashes in China and you’ll comment “Guess is not worse than Gaza, so… who cares?” So please, continue to politicise every aspect of life.

Congrats on missing the point completely.

This story is a hit piece to make Iran look bad. You think it’s a human interest piece to make people feel sad for an awful thing that happened to a young girl. It’s not. It’s about making Islamic countries look bad for attacking a poor white girl who was just trying to get healthy. It conveniently ignores where and why Iran attacked and what Israel has been doing to get attacked. It completely ignores all relevant context behind the story. It completely ignores the dozens of kids that are getting killed by Israel on a daily basis. THAT is why people are bringing it up.

And two things in response to this particular post by you: 1) Nobody is blaming this kid. Do you not understand written English? Not one single person said it was the kid’s fault for dying. 2) Nobody would bring up Gaza in a story about a school bus in China because China isn’t out there murdering dozens of Gazans on a daily basis. This is a story about Israel being attacked, so it is relevant to bring up how Israel is attacking multiple countries.

We all feel sad that a little girl died. But this story was a political story masquerading as something else. You fell for it.

And you are choosing to ignore that Ukraine is being bombed daily by Iranian Shahed drones for several years now. So you are missing the point too. What harm did Ukraine do to Iran?

How is it sick and vile to say all kid deaths are equally sad? I would think that it is more sick and vile to think that a kid’s death is worse than other kids’ deaths because of where those kids are from. There is no blame here but against those who don’t speak up against war mongerers and people who willingly serve them.

Sad, I hope they are angry at the Israeli colonial project for having started another war.

Unfortunately personally knowing far too many Ukranian/Israeli dual citizens, I highly doubt it. They see Israel as the victim without a shred of self awareness.

A tragic story that should be added to piles of child tragedy in Palestine as well as the other affected countries from these conflicts. Speaking of Palestine, I can’t see it mentioned at all on the front page of rferl.org.
