The PlayStation 5 continues to smash it

No. It doesn’t. I’ve read lots of articles implying the rate of adoption was slow, and most ps5 owners were just playing a lot of ps4 games for a long time.

It was shocking to me how little I cared. After like 4 years I own maybe 3 PS5 games and finished none of them.

I got a PS5 so I could play Demons Souls Remaster, when that game launched.

I haven’t touched the console since I beat the game. It has been sitting collecting dust for years, just like my Nintendo Switch did before I sold it.

I’m still rolling with a PS4 Pro my buddy gave me when he popped for a PS5. Honestly not feeling like I’m missing out.

It is, however, also fair to point out that I have also built and maintained a Gaming Machine of Theseus for many, many years.

        Gaming Machine of Theseus

That might be the best, most relatable thing, I’ve read in ages. When people ask how old my PC is it’s… well… which part?

If we go by oldest part, I’ve got a really good KW seasonic PSU from probably a decade ago that’s still going strong. But pretty much everything else has evolved at one point or another from when that was introduced.

I told my wife to not buy me a ps5, since I didn’t see any games I wanted. She did so anyway. I have yet to buy a single ps5 game, still working through all the ps4 stuff. I’ll buy a handle of ps5 games when ps6 is probably out. I’ve told her to NOT buy me a ps6 in the future, but she’ll probably ignore that as well.

Sorta unrelated, but this generation of consoles feels like the death knell at least for me.

I bought an Xbox Series X right as it came out as I had with pretty much every MS console since I was a kid. I was just the right age and all my friends were obsessed with Halo and Fable. I played it quite a bit the first 2 or 3 years I had it, but now it just collects dust.

Ironically it’s Microsoft’s decisions with Windows that pushed me to abandon ship. I hated using Windows since 8 came out and started using Linux a lot more. Which lead me to Steam and Proton of course. And now that’s the only way I really play games these days.

Triple A gaming feels pretty much dead to me too. I basically only play the same few strategy games and the occasional RPG and that’s all I really need anymore.

Maybe I’m just getting older and it’s irrelevant to what’s going on with the rest of the industry. Just wanted to share my experience because it blows my mind they’re already talking about the next generation of consoles. The Series X and PS5 still feel brand new to me. Did either of them even have a single killer app? It’s felt very underwhelming and I’d be okay if they waited until 2028 or so to be honest.

Sony just introduced a low-power mode for PS5 that looks like groundwork for some kind of PS5-compatible handheld so this ”leak” sounds very unlikely from the get go.

This low power mode has RAM running at half the bandwidth which will really kneecap performance but is a common way to increase efficiency in mobile devices. If it was about saving power they wouldn’t make adapting existing games this hard IMO.
