Thanks, Trump! The animals thank you, too!

    – A vegan

Imagine humans revolting because they’re pissed they don’t have the luxury of supporting ongoing genocide of living beings in the name of immediate gratification.

Yeah, honestly, these price increases will be universal like every fucking time oil spikes. Yeah, beef will be more expensive, but so will rice, soy, beans, etc. Ya can’t change your diet to avoid that. For the record, my beef consumption already took a nosedive shortly after COVID, and likely isn’t coming back any time soon. Shit is too expensive to justify. I’ll have it maybe once a month, but it’s mostly poultry and eggs for me.

Wait, which message did conservative radio give my brainwashed family members to parrot?

“Eggs are too expensive, its the President’s faukt.” “Steak is too expensive, eat something else.”

I need to know what to expect at Thanksgiving.

i am not against changing our diet per say. i can envision a future where we eat more bugs/algae proxies. when playing cyber punk i saw an ad for pizza with “REAL peperoni crickets” or something, and wile i know it’s out there to shock the player, the more i think about it the more i embrace it.

in this case i declare broken clock protocols, and know that this is a symptom to larger rot in society, but our current way of life was never sustainable, nor particularly healthy.

Meanwhile legumes: am I a joke to you?

Miraculous nitrogen fixing nutritional powerhouses with more culinary flexibility than virtually everything else out there, and y’all are so averse to putting some plants in your mouth that you’d start talking about resorting to eating bugs.

To be fair I do regularly take algae oil supplements I guess. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

        jesus tap dancing christ.

the speed at which a vegan IMMEDIATELY shot me down as not good enough has to have been precognition.

but sure, yea, whatever, beans and other plants we are already eating should probably be involved and be more prominent in our diets.

        damn!

Uh dude, you’re talking about eating animals. What, you think I’m gonna be like, “Yeah eat those crickets! Fuck those guys!”?

But also, in this case I was more criticizing your dramatics about cyberpunk dystopias. Like yeah, meat is unsustainable, so of course things like this will happen. What does that leave? The stuff you should be eating more anyway.

I actually agree. Eat less beef and more vegetarian meals. I ate beef today but I also had vegetarian meals 4 days in the last week

It’s not hard to have a vegetarian day. Think about it: on any given day maybe you have oatmeal or cereal for breakfast, then a PB&J for lunch, then all you have to do is have a CBR burrito for dinner, and BAM, you’ve had vegetarian day.

I’m also not 100% vegetarian, but I try to be more often than not. Because of various compelling reasons.

It is a lot easier to commit to being a sometimes vegetarian than to give up all meat cold turkey. Eating less meat is better for health and for the environment

Edit: I do want to also acknowledge though that if someone is reducing their meat consumption, that is great too. Any effort helps.

This isn’t necessarily true. I’ve seen interviews with plant-based health coaches who’ve talked about adherence being better when people do jump all in with a plant-based lifestyle. That’s what worked for me too, partly motivated by what I saw in documentaries about factory farms and slaughterhouses, and partly motivated by seeing my own family members die from preventable diseases way younger than they could have lived. Our choices have consequences, so there is urgency.

I went all in for as long as I could, messed up, then immediately tried again and pushed for even longer. Eventually something clicked in my mind and I knew, “I literally don’t even need or want this.”

If food is too expensive, don’t eat.

    -Republicans

    Famine makes ecconomic sense

    -Also Republicans

Why aren’t the plebians having kids? We need more wage slaves! Maybe outlawing abortion is the solution.

    -Republicans, again

I was in an argument just yesterday on the “not having enough kids” subject where people were insisting that younger generations are choosing to live in “expensive places” and that they should move to “cheaper places” so they can start families. As if the idea of abandoning their lives, careers and friends to go live out in the boonies in order to provide a bare-minimum QoL for their family is going to change any dual-income-no-kids couples’ minds.

There are no cheap places to move. In the USA, anyway. Anywhere that has “affordable” homes has no jobs, so they’re not actually affordable. And employers are getting harder about remote work. It’s very frustrating because I would happily move to a “less expensive area” but I can’t afford it 😂

“Clearly, this generation knows nothing of hardship. It may not seem like it but we live in the most equitable period in the history of the US and the tools and technology available to you give you no excuse for failure. The previous generations had the Great Depression and World Wars and all you do is complain. Instead of living selfishly beyond your means, try living on a budget. You don’t need to have money to start having kids, there are people living in poverty all over the world and that’s not stopping them.”

Obviously, just about the biggest /s I’ve ever /s’ed. These are just an example of the things people have said to me, taken more or less verbatim.

There’s a gap between valuing oneself and just trying to survive.

If I valued myself, I would living around the California central coast or wine country, not North Carolina.

Considering that beef is a potential carcinogen, it’s actually good advice. Plus, cattle are a massive producer of methane, which is far worse for global warming than CO2

    Not to mention screw worms.

    Good message, wrong reasoning.

Ecologists have been telling people [from rich countries] to minimize beef consumption or drop it altogether for years, but not because of its price tag.

not because of its price tag

I get what you mean, and agree, but want to point out that at least in a sense, it is because of the price tag: the cost to the environment and to others, in the form of water use, land use, carbon and methane emissions, etc. Internalizing those external costs would make beef cost more money at the point of sale.

Just wait until they start policing what those on food stamps are putting in their grocery carts again. I swear that was almost an entire genre of “reporting” for them for a while there.
